January 23rd isn’t a particularly thrilling day in music history, but it’s not quite a dud of a day either. On this day in 1971, George Harrison became the first solo Beatles member with a number one hit. His song “My Sweet Lord” stayed atop the charts for five weeks before being dethroned.
In 1977, Patti Smith fell off stage in Tampa Florida breaking a vertebra in her back on the 23rd.
The legendary pianist Ray Charles was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on January 23rd 1986. Charles was an exceptionally talented singer, songwriter, musician and composer who’s work earned him the nickname “The Genius”.
“The Way You Make Me Feel” by Michael Jackson hit #1 on the singles charts on January 23rd 1988. The song was Jackson’s 9th #1 single out of a total 13 in is career.
January 23 was a somber day in 1990. The seemingly invincible Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd died of a pneumonia, he was just 37 years old. Collins had previously survived a plane crash that took the lives of two band mates, and a car crash that took the life of his girlfriend and left Collins paralyzed below the waist. During his career Collins played guitar and co-wrote most of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s hit songs with lead singer Ronnie Van Zant including “Free Bird” and “That Smell”.

Sunday, bloody Sunday. You have most likely heard Bono and U2 sing those words over your radio hundreds of times over the years, but do you know where that term came from? The answer lies in Russia. On January 22nd, 1905 a large demonstration of workers marched to the Winter Palace in St. Petersberg to petition the Czar. Troops fired on the demonstrators which began the violent phase of the Russian Revolution and led to the nickname “Bloody Sunday.”
In less violent music news, January 22nd 1953 saw the birth of Journey front-man Steve Perry. On this day in 1966, The Beach Boys recorded the opening track to their fourth studio album “Pet Sounds.” That track, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”
In 1967 The Monkees used January 22nd to play their first live show in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. Don McLean’s uber-hit “American Pie” started a seven week run at the top of the US album chart on this day in 1972.
“Wouldn’t it be nice” to see the Beach Boys this summer at the Melody Tent? Get your tickets today to reserve your seat!
What can we say about January 21st. Well, to start, the 21st of January in 1966 saw the Beatles George Harrison marry Patty Boyd with Paul McCartney as best man. Boyd later divorced from Harrison and went on to marry Eric Clapton, who wrote the song “Layla” about her.
In 1968, Jimmy Hendrix chose January 21st as the day he recorded the popular Bob Dylan song, “All Along The Watchtower.” Yesterday we talked about Pink Floyd unsuccessfully trying to play “Dark Side of the Moon” for the first time in 1972, well a day later (Jan. 21st) they got it right and the audience heard for the first time in its entirety the second highest selling album of all time.
In 1941, Richie Havens passed away on January 21st. Havens was known for his version of George Harrison’s “Here Comes The Sun”, with his recording of it reaching as high as #16 on the US charts.
Make sure you come and see The Fab Four’s version of “Here Comes The Sun” this summer at the Tent on July 25th.
